What if the only people involved in your care are you and your doctor?

What is Direct Primary Care

Direct primary care (DPC) is a healthcare model that emphasizes a direct relationship between patients and their primary care providers. In this model, patients pay a monthly or annual fee, bypassing the need for insurance or copayments for routine visits. That means I work for you. Not for insurance companies or employers or a big system. Just you.

DPC in pediatrics follows a similar approach, focusing on delivering comprehensive and personalized care for children and adolescents. Pediatric direct primary care providers aim to build strong relationships with families, offering unhurried visits, extended appointment times, and easy access to care. This model allows me to spend more time with my patients, address concerns thoroughly, and provide continuity of care.

With direct primary care, I have more flexibility to tailor my services to the unique needs of your family. I can provide a wide range of services, including preventive care, well-child visits, vaccinations, acute illness management, chronic disease management, mental health support, and even some house calls. Additionally, I offer after-hours access, telemedicine consultations, and enhanced communication channels, like texting, to ensure timely care and support.

This model can be beneficial for families, as it offers cost transparency and reduces the financial burden associated with traditional insurance-based healthcare. It allows families to budget for primary care services without worrying about copayments or surprise medical bills. Moreover, the direct relationship between pediatricians and families fosters trust and facilitates better coordination of care, resulting in improved health outcomes for children.

Overall, direct primary care in pediatrics focuses on fostering personalized, accessible, and comprehensive care for children and adolescents while promoting a strong doctor-patient relationship.

Maybe you have more questions

  • Do I still need insurance?

Yes. Insurance will still be needed to cover major medical issues, consultations with specialists, imaging, outside laboratory tests, and vaccines. On request, I can also generate a billing receipt you can submit to insurance for covered services that are out-of-network.

  • What happens if my child is sick while we are out of town?

We talk. You can text or call and we can decide if we should do a virtual visit or if a higher level of care is needed. My DPC practice is about 20% the size of my old panel of patients. This makes it easier to be more available for families when they need the care most.

  • I can really call you and text you?

Absolutely. So many issues can be resolved just with a conversation. Without the need to make you schedule a clinic visit to get paid, I’m free to check out that picture you want to send me and see if it warrants a visit, saving you from days off of work or days out of school.

Really, 24/7. By being more available during the daytime, problems can be addressed and questions answered. If it’s an emergency overnight, I want you to call.

  • What's included?

Checkups. Unlimited sick visits (acute and chronic care). Remote visits/virtual care. Routine vaccinations. School/camp/sports physical forms. Developmental and behavioral screenings. Counseling and guidance (nutrition, development, sleep, behavior, parenting, and more)

Evaluation and medical management (when necessary) of chronic pediatric conditions such as eczema, asthma, ADHD, depression, anxiety, and more

  • Is it worth it?

I definitely think so. Clinics, urgent cares, and emergency rooms are all overly busy these days. This can lead to hours spent waiting to be seen or days waiting for an appointment to address issues that can sometimes can be handled with a conversation. Your time is valuable. Being part of direct primary care could avoid a day of missed work or lost PTO. It also allows you to stay home instead of in an Urgent Care or waiting in the ER. Places your child could also pick up new germs.

In my DPC practice, you’ll also have more flexibility to schedule an appointment time that works for you, also avoiding missed work. No waiting weeks or months for a checkup or days for an ill visit. Usually, things can be handled the same day.

  • How much does it cost?

$85 a month for each child in your family with a maximum family cost of $325 a month. This includes all visits and all communication. Checkups, mental health visits, parent support, phone calls, text messages, emails, and more. Many members use their HSA account to pay their monthly fees.

With better accessibility and availability, you can avoid missed work or a child missing school. More value exists when you can avoid the need for an office visit entirely because you can connect with me so easily.

A limited number of reduced rate and free memberships exist as well. Please contact me if you’d like to discuss that further.

  • Won't you be really busy?

My panel of patients historically was around 2000 individual patients. I plan on capping around 400-500 patients, 20-25% of what I saw before. In a given day, a doctor will interact with 1-2% of all of their patients, which means 4-10 patient interactions a day now instead of 20-40.
